I spoke with Bishop Pavon on Sunday and he has agreed to an interview. You can contact him at elpavon@hotmail.com. As I mentioned, the leadership of wards (Mormon term for congregations) in the Mormon chruch is lay. He has only been in this position for 5 weeks or so, but he had been attending the ward for a few years. The previous bishop just moved to Idaho for a new job. Others in the ward may have better understanding of the history of the educational programs than Bishop Pavon. He asked that he be able to see the kinds of questions you will be asking the others in the ward that you interview. I would be more than happy to participate in an interview as well (or answer general questions about the structure of the church), but if you are looking for information regarding education and youth, there are a couple of other people I would suggest you speak with instead. Also, there is a Spanish speaking ward that meets in the same building--but the youth program is largely conducted in English. If you are interested in looking into this congregation, I could make contact for you as well. Please let me know if you have any questions, Karen On 3/28/07, Herve Varenne wrote: Dear Karen, I really appreciated your willingness to help us in our project on education in Harlem. Just in case there were difficulties, the project public web site is at: http://varenne.tc.columbia.edu/project.html I wonder whether you have talked to your bishop and whether he would agree to an interview about his understanding of the educative functions of the church. I would need his contact information. We would also like to talk to you about your own responsibilities as a leader of the women's groups (as I understood from our all too rushed discussion), and, we hope, observe examples of what these groups do. In order to keep our various statuses distinct, it would be Linda Lin, the postdoc from Stanford I mentioned, who will be contacting you on this. If you need to talk further about this, I could see you tomorrow after my office hours.
